SeaStone advantages from a LEED Perspective

Evaluation prepared by an independent LEED AP

SeaStone® is an Emerald Award winning trademark line of products uniquely composed of natural Florida Fossil shell and are manufactured in the U.S.A. As a manufactured stone, SeaStone helps to protect the environment by serving as alternative green product to mined stone. The shell and other marine fossils that form the foundation of the SeaStone tile product are natural fossil waste products derived regionally and outside the United States. SeaStone utilizes recycled, tumbled waste glass from glass manufacturers in its product line. The result is an eco-friendly tile product that reveals the translucent, light refracting qualities of glass and natural beauty of shell.

SeaStone® products have the following features through design and engineering:

• Manufactured in Fort Lauderdale, FL utilizing natural fossil shell & other recycled waste resources available regionally.
• Hydraulically manufactured; Calibrated and rectified through automated processes
• Available in flooring or paver thickness for vertical or horizontal applications.
• Suitable for Interior/Exterior, Wet/Dry, and Floor/Wall Applications
• Uniquely processed to provide a natural variation from piece to piece that replicates the appearance of a natural stone therefore no two pieces are alike
• Full line of matching edging and trim provides limitless design capabilities above and below the water line.
• Freeze/Thaw stable (ASTM C1026, C373, C39, C482, C485)
• Slip Resistant, dry or wet, COF is >0.65 (ASTM D-1028-84)
• ASTM E 1980-01 meets or exceeds LEED requirement for SRI Heat Island Effect
• UV resistant
• Stain, mold, mildew, and wear resistant (with proper sealing)
• Eco-friendly, Emerald Award winner for Green Products and Practices

SeaStone® products LEED contributions:

Material & Resource Credits 4.1 & 4.2: Recycled Content (2 points possible) SeaStone products contain recycled content that ranges from 70% on average to 75% of the product by weight. Of the recycled content, generally 80-100% is pre-consumer waste, with the balance being post-consumer waste. One point is granted for 10% recycled content and a second point for an additional 10% (20% total) of the total value of the materials on the project. SeaStone exceeds recommended recycled content by nature.

Material & Resource Credits 5.1 & 5.2: Regional Materials (2 points possible) SeaStone Products are manufactured in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. If your project is within 500 miles of our location SeaStone products will qualify as a regional material. One point is awarded if 10% of the project building materials is extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured (in
South east Florida) within a 500-mile radius of the project site and a second point is awarded if the total percentage of the cost of regional materials is at least 20%.

Sustainable Sites Credit 7.1: Heat Island Effect: non-roof (1 point possible) Provide any combination of the following strategies for 50% of the site hardscape (including roads, sidewalks, courtyards, or parking lots, etc). ASTM E 1980-01 SeaStone exceeds LEED requirement for SRI
Heat Island effect (rating = 66).

Innovation in Design Credit 1-1.4 : Innovative performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by the LEED for New Construction Green Building Rating System.
SeaStone products by design have been recognized by the EPA for its unique composition of natural fossil shell which provides an alternative to the use of natural coral in construction and therefore aids in the protection of our natural coral reefs. SeaStone contains approximately 30% or greater of recycled materials.

Low-Emitting Materials Credit 4.1 (adhesives and sealants) & 4.2 (paints and coatings)
SeaStone products contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and thus emit no VOCs. We recommend that SeaStone products be used in conjunction with certain low-VOC or no-VOC setting materials and sealants. SeaStone products are supported and tested by industry brand GREEN setting materials and sealants for use in standard installation on grade or use with mortar.
